Interpreting and Translation
Interpreting and translation are professional skills that only the most proficient bilinguals can be trained to perform. The work of interpreters and translators is captivating, challenging and varied, and makes a critical contribution to communication in government and non-government organisations, business, international relations and human services.
The School of International Studies offers a number of postgraduate coursework programs in interpreting and translation which have been approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Program Information
Master of Arts (Extension) in Interpreting and Translation
NAATI accredited at the professional translator and professional interpreter level
The MAITS Extension program provides up-to-date, all-round education in interpreting and translation over three semesters, combining theoretical, practical and professional courses in English and the following languages:
> Chinese > French > German > Indonesian > Russian > Japanese > Korean > Spanish
The third semester of study allows for further development of interpreting skills. In addition to sight translation, short consecutive and long consecutive interpreting (with note-taking), students will have the opportunity to practice conference interpreting (simultaneous interpreting with equipment).
Professional Practice
Students are required to complete 150 hours of practicum, during which they gain professional experience by undertaking real-world translation and interpreting.
Program Structure
Students are required to complete a total of twelve courses (72 units of credit) over the period of at least 3 semesters, including nine core courses in interpreting and translation theory and practice (3 contact hours per week) and three elective courses in Contextual and Advance Language (6 units of credit each course).

Master of Arts in Interpreting and Translation Studies (MAITS)
NAATI accredited at the professional translator level
The MAITS program prepares students for career opportunities as translators and interpreters, and equips them with research techniques. The program incorporates key languages required by the international and domestic markets. Courses are offered in English and the following languages:
> Chinese > French > German > Indonesian > Russian > Japanese > Korean > Spanish
Professional Practice
Students are required to complete 75 hours of practicum, during which they gain professional experience by undertaking real-world translation.
Program Structure
Students are required to complete eight courses including five core courses plus three elective courses.

Graduate Certificate in Arts – Interpreting (4 courses) – NEW!
Students are trained in a variety of interpreting modes and fields required by the global industry. The program offers a suite of practical interpreting courses, including community interpreting and conference interpreting. Courses are offered in English and the following languages: Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.
Entry Requirements (all programs)
A recognised Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with a credit average. Native or near-native bilingual proficiency is essential. International students must also meet English language proficiency requirements specified by UNSW. English language proficiency at or above an IELTS score of 7 is advisable for students attempting these programs.

NAATI Accreditation
The National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) is the national standards and accreditation body for translators and interpreters in Australia. It is the only agency that issues accreditations for practitioners who wish to work in this profession in Australia. UNSW programs in interpreting and translation are approved by NAATI.
